From GIS to Data Science: My Journey in Uncovering Patterns and Building Resilience

Hello and welcome to my website! I’m Ahmad Riyadh, a Data Scientist and Geospatial Analyst with over a decade of experience in GIS, data analysis, and resilience research. As I’ve evolved through my career, I’ve come to appreciate how data science and geospatial analysis can intersect to create meaningful insights, particularly in fields like disaster resilience, urban planning, and infrastructure optimization. I’d like to take you through my journey and some of the work that drives me today.

A Foundation in Geospatial Analysis

My career began with a focus on GIS technology, where I quickly realized the transformative potential of spatial data. From mapping flood resilience in Bangladesh to optimizing fiber optic networks and enhancing transportation efficiency, I discovered that geospatial insights could answer complex questions and aid in real-world decision-making. Early on, I was driven by the power of maps and spatial data to reveal hidden patterns and trends that text or numbers alone couldn’t capture.

Bridging GIS and Data Science

As the data landscape expanded, so did my toolkit. I began integrating machine learning and AI into my GIS work to push beyond traditional boundaries. With skills in Python, R, SQL, and platforms like Azure, I could analyze more complex datasets and uncover trends that were previously out of reach. Whether predicting network coverage needs or assessing resilience in urban settings, data science enabled me to create models that predict outcomes and help communities prepare for challenges like natural disasters.

The Role of Data in Building Resilient Communities

One area I’m particularly passionate about is resilience research. I believe that data holds the key to helping communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. My work at the U.S. Census Bureau, where I apply Geo-AI techniques on census data, allows me to explore how demographic, economic, and social factors impact disaster resilience. This data-driven approach provides a foundation for creating resilient, sustainable communities.

Through my research, I strive to address questions like:

  • How can we use data to mitigate the impacts of climate change on vulnerable populations?

  • Which urban planning strategies will make cities more resilient to natural disasters?

These are questions that drive my work and inspire me to keep exploring new ways to apply data science for positive impact.

Looking Ahead: Integrating AI for a Smarter Future

The future of data science and GIS is promising, with new tools and technologies emerging every day. I’m excited to explore how advances in AI can enhance my work in resilience research and geospatial analysis. By leveraging deep learning, predictive modeling, and cloud platforms, I believe we can transform how we analyze and respond to challenges in urban planning and disaster management.
